Why move to Algarrobo

There aren’t many unspoiled villages this close to the Costa del Sol. In Algarrobo village you’re amongst the relaxed beauty of the Axarquia but just 30 minutes away from the action of Malaga.

A river runs through the village named after the sweet carob that grows on the local trees. Follow another path through a patchwork of vineyards and you are on the Ruta del Sol y del Vino (route of sun and wine) which leads east to Nerja. Life truly is sweet in Algarrobo and it will come as no surprise that people have chosen to live here since prehistoric times. Today it remains an attractive Moorish style village of narrow white streets and houses bedecked in colourful flowers. Continue just 3 km down the road and you’ll find the beaches of Algarrobo Costa, equipped for all the fun of the Costa del Sol.

Community

Small but perfectly formed, Algarrobo is home to a modest but friendly population of approximately 5,000 residents who are mainly Spanish.

Property

Houses, villas and apartments of all shapes and sizes can be found in Algarrobo and its surroundings. It’s very reasonably priced too, especially compared to the western Costa del Sol or some of the fashionable inland villages of the Axarquia.

Amenities

You’ll find bars, banks, bakeries and a bookshop in town and it’s just a 10 minute drive to the Baviera Golf Course. There are also a generous number of parks to explore, with tropical plants and a municipal swimming pool.

Transport

Algarrobo is around 32 km east of Malaga, a half hour’s drive along the fast A-7 motorway. If you’re without transport, there are bus services connecting you with the city and many other local destinations.

Employment

Most of the work is to be found within the tourist industry around the coast and with Malaga within reasonable commuting distance you will find a more diverse range of opportunities.

Health

The town has a public health centre which offers English speaking doctors on request. The nearest hospital is 15 minutes away in Velez Malaga.

Schools

There is a state school in town – a good way for children to assimilate into the local community. If you’d like to follow the UK national curriculum, the nearest international school is 30 minutes away in Almunecar.

Cost of Living

Prices tend to be a little cheaper east of Malaga and so it is in Algarrobo. You are within easy reach of a variety of supermarkets so it should be perfectly possible to keep the cost of your weekly shop down.
